Brightness controls overall lightness or darkness. Increasing brightness lifts shadows and midtones, making the entire image lighter. Too much brightness washes out detail; too little makes images murky.
Contrast affects the difference between light and dark areas. High contrast creates punchy, dramatic images with deep blacks and bright whites. Low contrast produces softer, more muted looks. Saturation controls color intensity. Boosting saturation makes colors more vivid; reducing it moves toward grayscale.
When Enhancement Helps vs When It Hurts
Enhancement works best on underexposed photos, flat lighting conditions, or images that look washed out. A subtle increase in contrast and saturation can make smartphone photos look more professional.
Over-enhancement creates obvious artifacts: halos around edges, unnatural skin tones, posterization in gradients, and clipped highlights or shadows. Start with subtle adjustments and stop when the image looks natural.
