What happens to transparent areas?

JPG has no transparency channel, so transparent regions are filled with a solid background — white by default. If your PNG is a logo on a transparent background and you need it to sit on a coloured page, converting to JPG is the wrong move; keep it as PNG or use WebP.

Why is the JPG so much smaller?

PNG uses lossless compression, which preserves every pixel exactly and costs a lot of bytes on photographic content. JPG discards detail the eye is poor at noticing. On a photograph that difference is often 80–90% of the file size for no visible change.

When should I not convert to JPG?

Keep PNG for screenshots, logos, diagrams and anything with text or hard edges — JPG's compression produces visible halos around sharp boundaries. JPG is for photographs.

Can I convert back to PNG afterwards?

You can, but it will not restore anything. The detail JPG discarded is gone, and the resulting PNG will be a large file preserving a degraded image. Always keep the original PNG.
