What is HEIC and Why iPhones Use It
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It uses modern compression to create files roughly half the size of equivalent JPGs while maintaining the same visual quality.
This saves significant storage on devices that capture hundreds or thousands of photos. The tradeoff is compatibility — HEIC is not universally supported outside the Apple ecosystem.
Why You Need to Convert HEIC Files
Windows computers may not display HEIC files without additional software. Android devices, older image editors, and many web platforms do not accept HEIC uploads. Email recipients on non-Apple devices may not be able to view attached HEIC photos.
Converting to JPG ensures your photos work everywhere, with everyone, on any device.
Quality Preservation During Conversion
HEIC stores high-quality image data. When converting to JPG, FormatWiz uses high quality settings to preserve as much detail as possible. The resulting JPG files look excellent for sharing, printing, and viewing.
For archival purposes, consider keeping your original HEIC files as well.
Convert iPhone Photos Privately
FormatWiz decodes HEIC files and encodes them as JPG entirely in your browser. Your personal photos, family pictures, and private moments never upload to external servers.
This is especially important for the intimate photos we all capture with our phones.
