What actually transfers from PDF to Word

A PDF describes where every character sits on a page; a Word file describes a flowing document. Conversion rebuilds the second from the first, which is why simple reports survive perfectly while heavily designed layouts need a quick check afterwards.

ElementCarries over
Paragraphs & headingsReliably
Inline imagesReliably
Simple tablesUsually intact
Merged/nested table cellsMay shift
Multi-column layoutsOften reflowed
Scanned pages (no text layer)Needs OCR first

Typical jobs people use this for

  • Reclaiming an old contract or CV where the original .docx was lost
  • Editing a supplier's price list without retyping the tables
  • Turning a report PDF back into a working draft for the next quarter

When this is the wrong tool

If your PDF is a scan, convert it here and you will get empty pages — run it through OCR first. And if you only need to fix a typo or add a signature, the PDF editor does that without any format round-trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my tables and formatting survive the conversion?

Text, paragraph breaks and inline images carry over reliably. Complex structures — merged table cells, nested tables, multi-column layouts and unusual embedded fonts — are the areas most likely to shift, so it is worth skimming the first page of the DOCX before you start editing. Converting a single page first is a quick way to see how your particular document behaves.

Why is my converted document empty or full of strange characters?

That usually means the PDF is a scan rather than a digital document. Open the original and try to select a line of text with your cursor: if nothing highlights, the page is an image and there is no text layer to extract. Run the file through our OCR tool first to recognise the text, then convert.

Is there a file size limit?

Large documents are processed using your own device's memory rather than a server, so the practical ceiling depends on your machine. Documents up to around 50 MB are comfortable on a typical laptop. Very large files are best split into sections first.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript — the PDF never leaves your device and we have no server that receives it. You can confirm this by opening your browser's network tab while converting, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded.

Can I open the result in Google Docs or Pages?

Yes. The output is a standard .docx file, which Google Docs, Apple Pages, LibreOffice Writer and Microsoft Word all open natively. If you plan to edit in Google Docs, upload the DOCX and let Docs convert it rather than importing the original PDF.
